LSC 6600
Leveraging School Libraries to
Improve Student Learning

Formerly titled "School Library Advocacy for Administrators."

Initiated with federal grant funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services

Purpose

Philosophy

No school library program can be successful without the support and leadership of the building-level principal and the school administrative team. It takes more than a certified school library media specialist to create a quality school library program, imbed information literacy in a school’s curriculum, and impact student learning.

Building upon the principles of Information Power: Building Partnerships for Learning, the national school library guidelines developed by the American Association of School Librarians, this course encourages a strong alliance among the principal, the librarian, and the teachers, as well as other partners in the learning community, to develop a collaborative school culture where students are engaged and excited about learning information and sharing ideas.

Program Goals

Upon completion of the five-week program, administrators will be able to:

Outcomes
  1. Relate the research on school libraries that is correlated to increased academic achievement

  2. Make the connection between an information literacy skills curriculum and classroom content standards

  3. Develop a schedule for flexible use and increased student access to library resources

  4. Evaluate the school library media program understanding the four of the roles of the library media specialist, and

  5. Apply an action plan to reconceptualize a student-centered, information-powered school library media program

...Because Student Learning is the Bottom Line!
